Peru came from behind to defeat Egypt 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22) and triumph on their opening match on Pool B on Monday.
Alondra Alarcon, outside hitter and captain of Peru: “It was a great match for us. Maybe we were too nervous on the first set but after we calmed down, we managed to fight for the match and win it. Turning the match around like we did helped us getting more confidence in our game for the rest of the tournament. We’re happy that we won and now we just want to build from it.”
Gina Torrealva, head coach of Peru: “I felt the team a little too nervous in the beginning. After they settled, they played really well. This is a very young team, which has a big motivation to work hard and get better and we’re working with them for it.”
Ayatallah Ahmed, middle blocker and captain of Egypt: “It wasn’t our best performance, we certainly have more than what we showed today. We’re a very young team and haven’t played together in a tournament before and had a long trip and a big time difference, so the first match was always going to be difficult. But I know the quality we have as a team and I’m sure we’re going to be better next match.”
