FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup starts Wednesday with Brazil aiming for third title

Osaka, Japan, November 16, 2009 – Following the great success of the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup, which concluded in Fukuoka on Sunday, the men’s edition begins in Osaka on Wednesday with world number one Brazil hot favourites to claim back-to-back titles and their third Grand Champions Cup in four editions. Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Japan and Poland are the other participating teams who stand in Brazil’s way.

Cuba (2001) and Italy (1993) are the only other teams to have lifted the FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup, which traditionally features continental champions, hosts Japan and a wild card entry (Egypt in 2009), however, as the women’s edition
proved, as far as predicting a winner, nothing can be taken for granted.

Brazil, the defending champions, arrive in Japan on the back of a brilliant 2009 FIVB World League triumph whilst also having qualified for the tournament by defeating Argentina to claim the 27th South American title. With rich form like that, the Olympic silver medalists will be hard to bet against adding to their FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup medal collection of two gold and two silver medals.

Other strong contenders for the Men’s World Grand Champions Cup, which includes two days in Osaka from November 18-19 and three days (Nov 21-23) in Nagoya, includes world number seven Poland. The European champions, who are making their first FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup appearance, are seen as the strongest challengers to Brazil’s run for the title especially taking into consideration their runner’s up performance to Brazil at the FIVB 2006 World Championships in Japan.

Meanwhile, the hosts, who are ranked 12th in the world, will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish of four years ago, which matched their best result at the quadrennial event in the first edition in 1993. Two fourths and two fifth-place finishes are four results coach Tatsuya Ueta and his charges will be definitely looking to improve upon.

One of the most entertaining teams in the tournament is guaranteed to be world number 13 – Cuba. An exceptional 2009 World League, where they finished fourth, brought back memories of their epic era of the nineties and now with the exciting Wilfredo Leon amongst their ranks, the Central Americans have every right to entertain thoughts of repeating their 2001 World Grand Champions Cup success.

Another team who has the potential to surprise is world number 18 Egypt. A major developer on the international scene in recent years, the Africa champions will be pleased with any improvement on their fifth-place finish of four years ago. Meanwhile, Asian Continental Championship runner’s up Iran will have one eye on their Japanese opponents after losing to them in the Continental final in four sets in October. Any kind of reverse of that result is sure to guarantee the FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup 2009 debutants of an overall satisfactory tournament result.

Agenda for Day One in Osaka: Egypt v Iran (1.30pm), Cuba v Brazil (3.30pm), Japan v Poland (7pm)

Men's World Grand Champions Cup coaches talk of grand plans in Japan

Osaka, Japan, November 17, 2009: The head coaches of the six teams for the FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup 2009 gathered for the official news conference at the teams’ hotel in Osaka on Tuesday evening. Here are their comments on the eve of the two-city, round-robin tournament to find the kings of the continents.

Bernardo Rezende (Brazil, South American champions)
"We have a very tough starting match against Cuba, who played an incredible, amazing World League and then beat the Olympic champions from the United States in the NORCECA championship. They are good, young and very strong. We have not had a lot of time together as some players have come from their clubs and some from the World Club Championship in Doha. It is a changed group from the years before and very good to be here and challenge all these good teams."

(On the team changes in the new Olympic cycle)
"Of the 14 players here, 10 are kind of youngsters who were not in the last cycle, such as middle blockers Lucas and Sidao, opposite Vissotto and outside hitters Thiago and Joao Paulo. We have a changing group, but not as young as the Cuba team. Poland, too, is also a young team. We are changing from the last eight years. We have a base and are trying to bring in some junior players for the next year."

Orlando Samuels (Cuba, NORCECA champions)
"Not only Brazil but the other teams will also be tough. Compared to the other teams Cuba is not as strong, so we will have to play at our best to win any game."

(On Cuba’s prospects):
"In the past we were able to finish in the top three in this tournament, but recently we have not been in such good form. We have young players, and we will try our best to finish in the top three this time. There is still hope."

Antonio Giacobbe (Egypt, wild card, African champions)
"Tomorrow we start with a match against Iran. Both teams know each other well because we played in Egypt in September, so I think it will be a very close match. We are ready to face this match against a team I respect so much."

Daniel Castellani (Poland, European champions)
(On facing Japan):
"We have not played Japan this year but have watched them on video. They play their very traditional game: they fight in every game, good technical play, so fast and speedy, and fight for each point on the court. This is the tradition of Japan.

Hossein Madani (Iran, Asian runners-up)
"I am very happy to be here among the highest level coaches and players. It will be a good and precious experience for me and my players. Tomorrow’s match will be a difficult match, especially for us because three months ago we had two matches in Egypt and lost two matches 3-0. But we have worked hard for this tournament and I am sure we will play our best for tomorrow’s match."

Tatsuya Ueta (Japan, hosts, Asian champions)
"We have the top teams here from each continent. We played Iran in the Asian Championship final, Poland is the European champion, Brazil is the South American champion…so we will see the top teams here together. This will give us very good experience and have a very positive effect for us."

(On the choice of three university students):
"In 2009, as with many other countries, we are trying to change the players and look for young players. Everybody is thinking about the London Olympics in 2012, and Japan is the same. Yako has a good jump and good possibility to be the future ace, while Furuta and Yasunaga have come in for Koshikawa and Yamamura, who are injured."

(On Wednesday’s opponent Poland):
"Poland has tradition and history. They are very tall and have a new head coach so a new strategy. They won the European championship title, beating Italy, so I think they will be a very strong and tough team. We are the challengers and will have to play our best to beat them."

(On his goals for the tournament):
"At the start of 2009 I had four priorities. The first was to qualify for the 2010 World Championship in first place. The second was to achieve the highest possible position in the World League. The third was to win the Asian Championship. We are now at the fourth stage with the Grand Champions Cup, and it is the best possibility to prove that our strategy is working."
