#EuroVolleyW Drawing of Lots coming up on Thursday in Baku!
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Imagen

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 21, 2016. After the terrific show that the organisers of EUROVOLLEY POLAND 2017 delivered last week in Krakow, Europe’s Volleyball family can start counting the days down to the next major highlight! The Drawing of Lots for the Final Round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women will be taking place this coming Thursday, November 24 in Baku, starting at 6 pm local time (3 pm CET). The much anticipated event will be streamed live and for free on the CEV YouTube channel, so save the date and bookmark the link in order not to miss any single moment of this ceremony!

The Drawing of Lots will be taking place at the iconic Heydar Aliyev Centre (see picture above), one of the most amazing landmarks of the Azerbaijani capital which is known for its distinctive architecture and style. The Centre is named after the founding father of modern Azerbaijan, the country’s late President Heydar Aliyev, and was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.

Europe’s Volleyball family could not ask for a more iconic location where to stage the Drawing of Lots of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley, the first competition of this calibre to take place in Azerbaijan and neighbouring Georgia. The tournament will run from September 20 to October 1 of next year and eventually crown the new ‘Queens’ of European Volleyball.

Russia are the defending champions after they retained the crown they won in 2013 at the end of a highly successful 2015 edition of Europe’s premier Volleyball competition co-hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium.

The organisers, Azerbaijan and Georgia, will announce on Thursday the names of another two teams that will be heading two of the four preliminary pools before all remaining participating teams will be drawn according to the latest European ranking.

Apart from hosts Azerbaijan and Georgia, five teams – Russia, the Netherlands, Serbia, Turkey and Germany – had secured their participation in the 2017 women’s EuroVolley by finishing at the top of the final standing of the 2015 edition. Another six teams – Italy, Belgium, Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria and Belarus – booked their ticket to Azerbaijan and Georgia via the second-round qualification tournaments held in September before the last three spots were claimed by the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Hungary after home and away third round matches contested in early October.

As per the official Competitions Regulations, the 2015 gold and silver medallists, i.e. Russia and the Netherlands, cannot be drawn in one and the same pool.

After the pool stage, the tournament will continue with the Playoff and quarter-final matches, reaching its climax with the semis and medal matches scheduled for September 30 and October 1, 2017 respectively.

#EuroVolleyW Drawing of Lots – The latest news from Baku…
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 23, 2016. The anticipation is mounting in Azerbaijan’s capital and the preparations are up and running at the iconic Heydar Aliyev Centre (see picture) – the impressive venue hosting the Drawing of Lots for the Final Round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women scheduled for Thursday, November 24 (starting at 6 pm local time, i.e. 3 pm CET). The ceremony, a must-watch not to be missed, will be streamed live and for free on the official CEV YouTube channel!

The 16 participating teams will be drawn across four pools, thus setting the tone for the Volleyball party that Azerbaijan and Georgia will be hosting in September 2017 – with the eventual gold medal winners to be crowned on October 1.

Venues

Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku will host two of the four preliminary groups at the truly iconic National Gymnastics Arena, a one-of-a-kind sporting venue where all playoff, quarter-final, semi-final and medal matches will be taking place as well. The arena was designed and built specifically for the inaugural European Games that Baku successfully hosted in June 2015.

The remaining two pools will be contested in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi and in Ganja – Göygöl, a city in north-western Azerbaijan which is a popular destination for holiday makers in the Caucasus region and hosts, inter alia, an Olympic sports complex.

Pool headers

Waiting for the Drawing of Lots coming up on Thursday, fans can start making their predictions about the two teams to be chosen by the organisers that will be seeded as the remaining pool headers alongside hosts Georgia and Azerbaijan… Who will they be?

The show…

Make sure you follow the show that the organisers will deliver together with the Drawing of Lots! Leyla Aliyeva, one of Azerbaijan’s most famous TV presenters who hosted the 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, will highlight a programme including a number of show acts as well as the participation of guests from the Volleyball family who will be in charge of drawing the 16 participating teams across the four pools…

News from the CEV

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 23, 2016. On Wednesday morning CEV President Aleksandar Boričić had the privilege and honour to have a meeting with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, while paying a visit to the country that will co-host the 2017 edition of the women’s European Championship.

Recalling his visit to Baku during the inaugural European Games held in June 2015 in Azerbaijan’s capital, Mr Boričić said that the Games were held at a level higher than the Olympic Games. He added that the foreign guests left the country with many wonderful impressions and memories. The CEV President emphasised that the organisation of such events is a good investment in the future development of Azerbaijan. Stressing the importance of the decision to hold the Final Round of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley in Azerbaijan and Georgia, Mr Boričić expressed his hope that the tournament will be successfully organised and thanked President Aliyev for his support.

Noting that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the development of sports, President Aliyev said the country makes great efforts to excellently organise all sporting events Azerbaijan is playing host to. Highlighting the significance of the Baku 2015 European Games, the head of state said Azerbaijan set itself the goal of holding these Games at the level of the Summer Olympic Games, and the country eventually achieved it.

President Aliyev also expressed his confidence that the Final Round of the 2017 women’s European Championship will be successfully organised in Azerbaijan, and will become yet another major international sporting event to be added to the impressive record of this country.

Si, además de que Italia tuvo buena suerte, le tocó el anfitrión más flojo y ningún rival de enjundia en los demás sorteados.
