Peru prevails in hardfought match with Canada
Lima, July 25, 2014 – Playing before more than 3,000 fans, host Peru made a successful debut in World Grand Prix 2014 with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 25-16) victory against Canada at the Eduardo Dibos Gymnasium on Friday.
Key Points
- The victory is Peru's second ever in the World Grand Prix, and the first in 20 years.
- Canada committed 34 errors in the match.
- Canada is now 0-6 all-time in World Grand Prix play. They were 0-5 in 2003 in their first appearance in the tournament.
The youth of the Peruvian players was not synonymous with a lack of hierarchy. Quite the opposite, they faced the return of Peru into the World Grand Prix scene in the best way possible. Angela Leyva was their go-to player, notching a match-high of 16 points.
Canada had in its high block the weapon that complicated Peru the most, and helped them remain vital in order to take the third set by a tight score (27-25). However, the constant errors in defense and inaccuracies in their kills didn't let them recover and reduce the big Peruvian advantage.Lucille Charuk led Canada with 12 points.
In the history of clashes between both, Peru and Canada had never played in World Grand Prix, However they had played four times in Olympics Games: Peru won three times (two in Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984) and Canada won once (Atlanta 1996).
Their last meeting was earlier this year, when Canada claimed victory with a 3-1 triumph in the Pan American Cup. Peru also achieved its second victory in a World Grand Prix. The first was in the Netherlands in 1994.
