Mazatlán sede de Finales Copa Continental NORCECA
Mazatlán, México, 20 de junio, 2012 – Equipos representando a ocho países – cada uno compuesto por dos parejas- están listos para batallas en las Finales de la Copa Continental NORCECA de Hombres y Mujeres, un torneo de voleibol de playa a celebrarse del 21 al 23 de junio en Mazatlán, México, que garantiza a los ganadores en ambos sexos un puesto a los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012.


Equipos de Cuba, Canadá, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador y el anfitrión México todos pasaron por el proceso de entrevistas preliminares y reunión técnica este miércoles.


Los equipos que finalicen en segundo y tercero aquí todavía tendrán una chance de llegar a Londres en el Torneo Copa Mundial de Clasificación Olímpica a efectuarse en Moscú, Rusia del 27 de junio al 1ro de julio, donde se ofrecerán dos pases más a los Olímpicos.


México, representado por sus estrellas locales Aldo Miramontes/Juan Virgen y los hermanos Ulises y Rodolfo Ontiveros abrirá los cuartos de finales jugando contra El Salvador. Los otros partidos de la ronda tienen a Puerto Rico contra Costa Rica, Cuba midiéndose a Guatemala y Canadá chocando con Nicaragua.


Las heroínas locales Mayra García/Bibiana Candelas y Vanessa Virgen/Martha Revuelta, iniciarán jugando contra Nicaragua en series de cinco juegos el jueves en la mañana. Las otras series de cuartos de finales presentan a Puerto Rico contra Costa Rica, Canadá ante El Salvador y Cuba entreteniendo a Guatemala.


Canadá superó a Cuba en un set de oro para ganar el primer puesto de Hombres en la Zona Central de NORCECA el año pasado en la República Dominicana donde México derrotó a Puerto Rico por el tercer puesto.


Costa Rica venció a Guatemala en un duelo sensacional de set dorado para obtener el primer puesto en el Torneo Inter Zonal de Montelimar, Nicaragua donde los equipos de Centroamérica se midieron a los del Caribe. Nicaragua derrotó a El Salvador por el tercer lugar.


Cuba obtuvo el primer puesto de Mujeres de la Zona Central de NORCECA al superar a Canadá en un set dorado el año pasado en Santo Domingo, donde México venció a Puerto Rico por el tercer puesto.


Costa Rica blanqueó a El Salvador por el primer puesto, mientras que Guatemala le ganó un set dorado a Nicaragua por el tercer lugar cuando los equipos de Centroamérica se midieron a los de la Zona del Caribe el pasado febrero en Malpaís, Costa Rica.


Las mujeres de Argentina y Mauricio, de Sur América y África respectivamente, fueron los dos primeros países en clasificar a los Olímpicos como ganadores de Copas Continentales. Los eventos de Europa y Asia tendrán lugar en Moscú, Rusia (22 al 24 de junio) y Fuzhou, China (del 20 al 24 de junio).


Venezuela y Sur África ya están clasificados entre los hombres mientras que los eventos de Asia se jugarán en Alanya, Turquía (22 al 24 de junio) y Fuzhou, China (del 20 al 24 de junio).

Para los que desconoscan este es como el PO continental del voley playero. Ninguna dupla del Norceca pudo clasificar por ranking, solo USA logro doble clasificacion en londres por ranking en ambos sexos.

Final-Four decided at NORCECA Women’s Continental Cup

Puerto Rico's Yarleen Santiago dives to keep the ball in play against Costa Rica in Mazatlan, Mexico on Thursday
Mazatlán, México, June 21, 2012 – Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico advanced to the semifinals of the NORCECA Women’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, a qualifying event to the 2012 London Olympic Games that began in Mazatlán a city located in the western coast of México on Thursday.

Friday’s semifinals feature Puerto Rico against Mexico while Cuba meets Canada in best-of-five series. The defeated countries will play best-of-three series for third place.

The winning country gets a direct ticket to the beach volleyball tournament of the London Olympic Games. The second and third place teams here move to the World Cup Qualification Tournament to be played in Moscow, Russia from June 27 to July 1.

The inaugural ceremony of the event was presided over by the Governor of the State of Sinaloa Mr. Mario Lopez Valdez and Mr. Alejandro Higuera Ozuna, President of the Municipality of Mazatlan.

Governor López Valdez welcomed the athletes and praised the high quality of the competition before officially declaring the opening the NORCECA Continental Cup.

Cuba overcame a surprising 2-1 defeat (14-21, 21-15, 15-13) suffered by Onayamis Sinal and Kirenia Ballard of Cuba-B to the hands of Ingrid Lopez and Lourdes Ramirez of Guatemala-A in the first match of their series.

The duo of Nirian Sinal and Ion Canet of Cuba-A came back to win their two contests, first seeing off Nadia Galan and Ana Villagrán of Guatemala-B (21-7, 21-12) and sealing the pass to the next round by downing Lopez/Ramirez (21-15, 21-14).

The tandem of Tatiana Encarnación and Dariam Acevedo of Puerto Rico-B stunned Costa Rica’s veterans Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro 21-14, 22-20 and then completed the 3-0 sweep with a 21-17, 21-11 win over Katherine Quesada and Eugenia Ramirez.

Canada-B team of Annie Martin and Marie Andree Lessard and Mexico-B pair of Vanessa Virgen and Marta Revuelta also won two matches against El Salvador and Nicaragua respectively.

No surprises in first day of NORCECA Men’s Continental Cup

Mexico's Ulises Ontiveros spikes against El Salvador's Jeovanny Medrano in Mazatlan, Mexico on Thursday
Mazatlan, Mexico, June 21, 2012 – The first day of action at the NORCECA Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals concluded without surprises as all the favorite countries won their series by sweeping the opponents on Thursday.

Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico all advanced to the semifinal phase of the competition following 3-0 victories over Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador respectively in their best-of-five match-ups.

Christian Redmann and Benjamin Saxton of Canada-B dominated in their two outings of the day. They first trounced Gerald Umaña and Dany Lopez of Nicaragua-A 21-6, 21-7) and then beat Henry Hernandez and David Mayorga of Nicaragua-B 21-14, 21-12.

Yaismel Borrell and Yadrian Escobar of Cuba-B opened with a 21-16, 21-13 triumph against Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido of Guatemala-A and then claimed a 21-10, 21-14 win over Julio Recinos and Luis Garcia of Guatemala-B.

The Puerto Rico-B team of Orlando Irizarry and Pablo Guzman began the day outdueling Julio Alvarez and Raul Sandoval of Costa Rica-A by scores of 21-13 23-25, 17-15 and had enough in the tank to prevail 21-17, 22-20 over brothers Gilberto and Alexander Villegas of Costa Rica-B.

Mexican brothers Ulises and Rodolfo Ontiveros outscored Jeovanny Medrano and David Vargas of El Salvador-A 21-19, 21-17 and closed the day with a 21-17, 21-13 win against Luis Morales and Carlos Escobar of El Salvador-B.

In Friday’s semifinals, Puerto Rico will be pitted against Mexico while Cuba squares off against Canada. The defeated teams will continue playing for third place.

The winning country gets a direct ticket to the beach volleyball tournament of the Olympic Games while second and third placed countries have another chance at the World Cup Olympic Qualification Tournament in Moscow, Russia from June 27 to July 1.

Canada and Mexico women’s to battle for London ticket
Canada's Annie Martin made sensational plays during the series against Cuba in Mazatlan on Friday
Mazatlan, Mexico, June 22, 2012 – Canada and hosts Mexico will battle for the women’s beach volleyball ticket to the 2012 London Olympic Games when teams from the two countries meet in a final best-of-five series at the NORCECA Continental Cup on Saturday.

Teams that finish in second and third place will join the World Cup Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Moscow, Russia from June 27 to July 1.

On the road to the deciding clash, Canada breezed past with a 3-0 victory over Cuba, while Mexico prevailed 3-1 against Puerto Rico following two well contested matches.

Annie Martin/Marie Andree Lessard of Canada-B first defeated Cuba-A’s team of Nirian Sinal/Ion Canet 2-0 (21-13, 21-15) while Heather Bansley/Elizabeth Maloney of Canada-A dispatched Kirenia Ballard/Onayamis Sinal of Cuba-B 2-0 (21-17, 21-13). In the third match, Martin/Lessard crushed Ballard/Sinal 21-12, 21-10.

Bibi Candelas and Mayra Garcia of Mexico-A won their two matches against Puerto Rico to secure their country’s spot in Saturday’s finals. They first won 21-18, 21-9 over Dariam Acevedo/Tatiana Encarnación and continued with a 21-14, 21-15 victory against Yarleen Santiago/Yamileska Yantin.

In the losers’ bracket, El Salvador won a golden set 15-12 over Guatemala while Costa Rica swept Nicaragua 2-0 to remain in contention for third place. El Salvador will play Puerto Rico and Costa Rica go against Cuba on Saturday.

Golden set paves way to Mexico at Continental Cup
Thousands of fans watched the victory of Mexico over Puerto Rico in a golden set on Friday
Mazatlan, Mexico, June 22, 2012 – Canada and Mexico reached the final series of the NORCECA Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup following successful battles against Cuba and Puerto Rico, respectively, in Mazatlan, Mexico on Friday.

Canada swept Cuba in the three contests while Mexico overcame Puerto Rico in five matches. The defeated sides will stay in competition for third place with Cuba playing El Salvador and Puerto Rico battling Guatemala.

The winners of the tournament are granted a ticket to the tournament of the London Games while the second and third place teams will stay in competition for the last two Olympic berths in offer at the World Cup Qualification Tournament in Moscow, Russia from June 27 to July 1.

Canada’s Christian Redmann and Benjamin Saxton won their two matches of Friday against Cubans Karell Piña and Sergio Gonzalez (21-19, 21-19) and Yaismel Borrell and Yadrian Escobar (21-15, 21-16).

Mexico’s combined team of Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros prevailed 15-10 in a golden set against Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock of Puerto Rico-A.
